Al:

I enjoyed the story and it made me think of back in World War !!. I got my first Marx train due to the fact that my Dad worked overtime at Pullman Standard; where they made tanks for the War. They used to run them up & down route 30 for testing. Anyway, that was a great memory. (was 1944)

Another memory was when my brother was only 5 years old. My Dad & I got him a Lionel train. I put it together and then when I finished; I said Bob how do you like your train. He said I thought it was your train. (was 1952)

Anyway, both fond memories and your story made me remember them.

Thanks again and Merry Christmas.

I still own a Lionel 027 gauge model of the Silver Streak. It still runs pretty well, and looks fairly good. It is Silver with red trim, and has 4 units rather than the original three. The train was a Christmas present for an older brother in about the same time the Burlington Silver Streak Zephyr began service (I would have been 3). Each car has two trucks rather than sharing trucks with connecting cars. But I also had a similar mechanical train, same gauge, that had only one axle on each car, and the leading part was supported by the

The Lionel Silver Streak is model number 1071 and the units are numbered 1700 through 1703. Thought you'd like to hear about it....

I had the good and timely fortune to take The 20th Century Ltd. in the 60's into Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal, having detrained in Chicago at the LaSalle Street Station from Los Angeles aboard the SuperChief, by Pullman sleeping accommodations, after 39 hours' travel time. The Ltd. was indeed elegant and most pleasurable to ride, again with comfortable Pullman sleeping accommodations and excellent service. My deep regret is that I did not take a camera with me to capture this wonderful but disappearing piece of history, as well as photographs of both the Los AngelesTerminal and the equally immortal Grand Central Station. While in New York, the Metropolitan Museum at once became my first item of tourism, allowing me to get a closer view of a Rembrandt I had seen auctioned off some weeks before leaving Los Angeles on television, "Aristotle Contemplating The Bust Of Homer."

Great article. Are you aware that the Hickory Creek, the observation car from the 1948 version of the train has been totally rebuilt, is Amtrak compatible and available for charters? The cars is owned by the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, a non-profit educational organization. We, Star Trak, Inc., rebuilt the car, operate and maintain the car for the organization.

What a simple and magnificent concept! Look at the amazing speeds obtained! How safe it was! (and they got the switches to work!). I am convinced that with today's engineering advancements, such a train could be resurrected and mass produced!
